Prisons, La Russa: "A decisive change of pace is needed to address the emergency."

"The suffering and difficulties associated with overcrowding in prisons represent emergencies that require a decisive change of direction. The dignity of the people who form the community in prisons is a necessity, indeed an obligation. Overcrowding generates unease and amplifies the perception of prison as a place of degradation and marginalization, undermining the primary objective of transforming serving a sentence into an opportunity for redemption, rehabilitation, and social rebirth, as prescribed by our Constitution." This was stated in a message sent to Rita Bernardini , president of the association "Nessuno tocchi Caino," by Senate President Ignazio La Russa , on the occasion of the "Laboratorio Spes contra spem" initiative, taking place in the Rebibbia prison.
"In this context," La Russa added, "I remain convinced that any initiative, including legislative ones, aimed at addressing this serious and enduring problem must be considered without falling into political or ideological prejudice. As President of the Senate, I extend this invitation to all political forces to let the principles of understanding and protecting the rights and dignity of every human being prevail, urging them to engage in open and constructive dialogue, while not forgetting the absolute value of the certainty of punishment."
The Second High Representative continued: "In expressing my sincere and affectionate sympathy for your advocacy and moral persuasion efforts, to the representatives of the association, to the many parliamentarians present, to the director of the institution, to the inmates, and to the men and women of the penitentiary police, I renew my greetings and my gratitude for the valuable civic and social work you have carried out" in "this precious moment of dialogue and discussion on a topic to which, also because of my professional background as a criminal lawyer, I have always paid particular attention."
